EN: Luis Javier Cintrón-Gutiérrez holds a Ph.D. in Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies from the University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY). He also holds a Master’s in Sociology from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras (UPRRP), and a Master’s in Mass Media and Contemporary Culture from the Ferré Rangel School of Communication at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. His BA in Political Science is from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM).

Cintrón-Gutiérrez is an Assistant Professor of Research and Exploration at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, where he also serves as the Academic Leader for 21st Century Skills in the School of General Education. His research explores narcoculture, marginality, and the urban experience in the contemporary transnational Hispanic Caribbean. He is the author of El muerto parao: Velorios, marginalidad y performance en el Puerto Rico contemporáneo (Ediciones del Flamboyán, 2025), a book that examines death, spectacle, and representation in Puerto Rican narcoculture.

He has taught at the University at Albany in the Departments of Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies and of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, as well as at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the Department of Sociology. Cintrón-Gutiérrez previously served as a Research Assistant at the Center for Social Research (UPRRP), the Center for Applied Social Research (UPRM), and the Center for Interdisciplinary Coastal Studies (UPRM).

He currently serves as Chair of the Culture, Power, and Politics Section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) for the 2025–2027 term.

Además, cuenta con una maestría en Sociología de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras (UPRRP), y una maestría en Medios de Comunicación y Cultura Contemporánea de la Escuela de Comunicación Ferré Rangel de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. Su bachillerato en Ciencias Políticas lo obtuvo en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Mayagüez (UPRM).

Cintrón-Gutiérrez es catedrático auxiliar de Investigación y Exploración en la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, donde también se desempeña como líder académico de Destrezas del Siglo XXI en la Escuela de Educación General. Su investigación aborda la narcocultura, la marginalidad y las experiencias urbanas en el Caribe hispano contemporáneo y transnacional. Es autor del libro El muerto parao: Velorios, marginalidad y performance en el Puerto Rico contemporáneo (Ediciones del Flamboyán, 2025), que examina la muerte, el espectáculo y la representación en la narcocultura puertorriqueña.

Ha enseñado en la University at Albany en los departamentos de Estudios Latinoamericanos, Caribeños y Latinos en Estados Unidos y de Lenguas, Literaturas y Culturas, así como en el Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, en el Departamento de Sociología. También se ha desempeñado como asistente de investigación en el Centro de Investigación Social (UPRRP), el Centro de Investigación Social Aplicada (UPRM) y el Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios Costeros (UPRM).

Actualmente, funge como chair de la sección de Cultura, Poder y Política de la Latin American Studies Association (LASA) para el periodo 2025–2027.
